The Felt Food Experiment

I’ve been having fun making different crocheted and knitted food for Kay the last couple weeks, so much so that I still haven’t finished the second of my pair of socks yet (though I’m finally to making the heel flap, so I’m getting there.) I decided that I might be ready to expand to felt foodies.

So I cruised around in a google search or two and found a few things to mess with, and stopped at the Hobby Lobby to pick up some felt squares to start messing with, and took my goodies to the recently cleaned dining table to play. I managed to whip up some Farfalle (bowtie) pasta pretty easily, and even a piece of lettuce or two pretty successfully.  So I hopped on Etsy and bought some patterns for some veggies and fruits and yummy looking cakes.

I decided to start with a tomato that looked pretty simple. HA! Maybe its the felt, or maybe its just me. It’s adorable and it was pretty easy to felt on the seed and inner ring, but it’s just a little too round, the faces of the peices don’t set together as nicely as I think they should.

So I think I’m going to pull down my stash of regular fabric, and see if maybe I can adapt the patterns to be sewn up. I need to drag out my machine anyway to work on some toques and aprons for the new shop.  So as much as I thought this would be simple, I’m sure its still going to be fun.

Maybe I’m jst destined not to work with felt outside of using it for details on standardly sewn foods. It sure would give me something unique to stock in the shop.. One at a time.

The Next Sock Adventure

December 30, 2008 at 3:04 am (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , )

So after the success of Kaylor’s house socks, I decided I needed a pair of my own, and whipped up a pair with some pretty teal yarn, but they didn’t quite come out as comfy as hers did, though they fit fine at the foot, they were really loose around the ankle.  One of the few things I can’t stand when socks do, so I knew I was going to need a better pair…

I found some great blue and chocolate verigated sportweight yarn at Hobby Lobby and a set of size 2 DPNs to try a real pair of socks. It was almost overwhelming to cast on those 60 stitches and get started but I was excited to see what I’d get. I was also excited to have also just gotten started with stuff on my Ravelry page, and wanted something to fill my projects with.

Its taken a few days, but I’ve finally gotten the first of the pair finished, and the next 60 stitches cast on ready for the next one. Thanks to KnittingDaily, I found a new way to finish socks that don’t involve the Kitchner stitch or completely binding off and sewing them up…
