The Felt Food Experiment
I’ve been having fun making different crocheted and knitted food for Kay the last couple weeks, so much so that I still haven’t finished the second of my pair of socks yet (though I’m finally to making the heel flap, so I’m getting there.) I decided that I might be ready to expand to felt foodies.
So I cruised around in a google search or two and found a few things to mess with, and stopped at the Hobby Lobby to pick up some felt squares to start messing with, and took my goodies to the recently cleaned dining table to play. I managed to whip up some Farfalle (bowtie) pasta pretty easily, and even a piece of lettuce or two pretty successfully. So I hopped on Etsy and bought some patterns for some veggies and fruits and yummy looking cakes.
I decided to start with a tomato that looked pretty simple. HA! Maybe its the felt, or maybe its just me. It’s adorable and it was pretty easy to felt on the seed and inner ring, but it’s just a little too round, the faces of the peices don’t set together as nicely as I think they should.
So I think I’m going to pull down my stash of regular fabric, and see if maybe I can adapt the patterns to be sewn up. I need to drag out my machine anyway to work on some toques and aprons for the new shop. So as much as I thought this would be simple, I’m sure its still going to be fun.
Maybe I’m jst destined not to work with felt outside of using it for details on standardly sewn foods. It sure would give me something unique to stock in the shop.. One at a time.
The First Pair of Socks
I’ve done it, I’ve finally done it!! I’ve gotten socks… After reading what feels like a hundred patterns, looking at at least 20 youtube videos, and trying and trying, I’ve got it!
And amazingly once my brain put it together it was easy!!
I decided to start with a small project, but had to hunt and peck for a while to find one that would work with the size DPNs that I currently own. ( somewhat limited as its a new thing for me to be doing) And after finally finding one that would fit my needles and my adorable daughter, I set to work.
I found this great Glow in the Dark yarn from Bernat in the discount bin at my local Michael’s and picked it up cause it was only $.99 a ball. Got 2 blue and 2 pink, a great deal. And thought this would be perfect for warm winter sockies to wear around the house for the kids.
Kaylor having the littler feet got hers first tonight as soon as I finished them, a couple evenings forthe socks isn’t too much tume for a little project like these socks, which although each came out slightly different than the other due to my lack of experience. But then how do you get good and consistant with anything unless you practice? Despite the litle flaws, shes already loves em to bits, becuse mommy made em just for her and they’re fuzzy n pink to boot!
The fingerless Glove question…
“but they’re just unfinished mittens.. who would want those?”
Ahh.. the thoughts of my ever so fashion forward thinking husband… (please note.. this is a man who thinks holey socks are ok cause noone sees em). But it is a good question, who would want them?
I know I love em, and why? becuse they help keep the cold wind from shoving its way up my sleeves, keeps my palms from freezing on my steering wheel in the morning, (with a pair of long fingered or convertible styled ones) still let me work the ATM buttons without exposing my fingers, and frankly.. i think they look cool.
Now here was my problem, there’s tons of patterns available online for fingerless gloves (or arm warmers if you please) but all the ones I tried never fit just right.. too tight across the hand, too loose around the wrist, they bunch, they slide off towards your fingers… dangit!! But I knew I liked em and knew I wanted to sell em on my Etsy but its one of my business principals that I don’t sell anything I wouldn’t use myself. So things had to be tweaked.
So i found a way to make the wrist area narrower without sacrificing stitches and just changed how I formed the hand portion and even made the thumb opening a lil longer than most. It fits Beautifully!! its a NEW FIT!! Actually I’m using it as a tag on Etsy to help people find em when they search.
So what do NEW FIT look like? heres a few images..
A couple of these are still available in the etsy shop:
